The Story Behind Devindo
“Devindo the Divine Herbal Tea from Indonesia”
Fate and opportunity brought me to Scotland to begin a life and a family with my husband and our two daughters. I originally had a background in tea in my native Indonesia. Whilst I fell in love and embraced my new country, I missed the quality of tea that had been part of my life.
Most teas in the United Kingdom were uninspiring – heavy black teas and poorly blended teas from low quality plants.
Sadly, a lot of tea I found in our popular brands are indeed “fanning’s” which are the left-overs when the highest-grade leaves have been extracted. Fanning’s are the dust that is left behind and used by commercial tea companies to bulk out tea mixing them with a few quality leaves.
Missing these good quality leaves, I regularly had some shipped over from Indonesia and of course they were often offered to friends who quickly developed a taste. As the shipping increased to meet the demand from my friends, I had the genesis of an idea to bring good quality teas to these shores.
From this seed Devindo was born – the name reflected my own name Devi and my native Indonesia.
Initially I introduced only the more popular teas such as Black and Green teas from the Gunung Rosa in Western Java and Gunung Dempo plantations in Sumatra – Mount Dempo is the highest stratovolcano in South Sumatra province, but as my ethnicity is both Chinese and Indonesian, I was able to travel to China and further afield to source many different and exciting new teas.
On my wonderful journey through China, I was introduced to artisan herbal teas and their fabulous taste. These were not commercially produced but were made in very small batches and were blended to order. The freshness and the difference in being blended as I waited was incredible and the taste was sensational.
I made a decision then to bring this style of herbal tea blending back with me. Borrowing on my 20 years of experience in the tea industry I thought of many variations and different tastes. At Devindo when you order herbal or loose-leaf tea, it is blended on the day we received your order and sent them out at the next day. I want you to experience the pure freshness, the fragrance and the wonderful taste that started me on this aromatic journey.
Whilst in China I researched and learned the benefits of Herbal Teas. It is considered one of the seven necessities of Chinese life and has a long history. Indeed, Camellia tea was drunk by the Emperors of the Han Dynasty and today Herbal tea is revered for its many health benefits.
Our Herbal tea range has many benefits. Beyond its incredible taste, it can be used to help various common ailments such as alleviating the pain of menstruation and assisting in lowering cholesterol. For a deep restful sleep then Chamomile and peppermint are wonderful teas to end the day with.
We offer a unique service whereby we will recommend an herbal tea that might help.
