White or light red crystalline powder, easily soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform and petroleum ether; soluble in water, its solution turns red in the presence of ferrous salts. 2. Used as a color developer for the photometric determination of metal elements such as iron, silver, cadmium and molybdenum. The complexes with Fe 2+ can be used as redox indicators. Bipyridine-iron complex cations can be used as precipitants and extractants for some anions.
